Which are the smartest breeds of dogs?

The Border Collie is the smartest breeds of dogs in the world, according to scientists, although closely followed by the poodle and the German Shepherd in a classification that includes the farmer and the Schnauzer.

How many words do dogs understand?

This ability to understand what we humans say, grows when it comes to one of the most intelligent dogs on the planet? And one more question: can the dogs know how to solve mathematical problems? This article resolves these interesting mysteries and reveals which are the 12 most clever dog breeds in the world, according to scientists.

The intelligence of the dogs

Not everything is numbers and letters. The canine intelligence is complicated to measure, and the scales that try to value it are not free to wake up controversy. Who does not believe that their pet is the smartest dog on the planet?

Controversies aside, scientists have tried to investigate how dogs learn and how to assess their intelligence. And they agree on something: it does not seem fair to value the intelligence of the dogs on a human scale.

To solve this problem, the researcher Stanley Coren, of the University of British Columbia (Canada) and member of the American Psychological Association, distinguishes three types of doggy intelligence, according to the nature of the animal. First, Coren refers to the instinctive intelligence of the dogs very developed. Second, there is adaptive learning; in other words, the knowledge that the dog earns daily for the pure necessity of survival. And, finally, this scientist speaks of an educational intelligence, which is what the dog acquires through education and whose result depends on the learning provided by his human and canine educator.

The 12 most smart dogs on the planet

Coren, who is one of the most acclaimed dog experts, has gone a step further in the study of dog intelligence and has developed a classification of the smartest dog breeds. To create it, he has analyzed the results of 200 canine obedience contests.

According to their criteria, and leaving mongrel dogs out for obvious difficulties of grouping them, these are the twelve most intelligent breeds in the world, arranged from most to least:

Canine abilities in language and mathematics

The dogs understand at least 165 human words and gestures and are able to solve simple mathematical problems. These are other interesting conclusions reached by Coren. And not only that: with the right education and commitment, says the scientist, a dog could differentiate 250 words.

However, its virtues do not end there. A dog can count up to four and even up to five. Working leg to leg with the furry companions is worth it. If you play with them to add and work with numbers, your intelligence increases, but with a limit your numerical capacity reaches four years of age on the human scale.

The book “The intelligence of dogs”; collects dozens of similar tests that allow measuring the learning ability of dogs, according to these criteria. The animal attraction program also gathers some of these intelligence tests for dogs, supervised by Coren himself.
